Saturday 7pm, Nigerians both home and abroad, tuned in to the Nigerian Electoral Debate Group (NEDG) and Broadcasters Organisation of Nigeria (BON), arranged presidential debate.
This was broadcast live across the globe, and while the trio of Oby Ezekwesili (ACPN), Kingsley Moghalu (YPP) and Fela Durotoye (ANN), came and shined by answering all questions, as well as pointing out why they are the best candidates in the forthcoming elections. The duo of Buhari and Atiku were absent.
Buhari according to his aides, had pressing engagements in Jos Plateau State, which clashed with the debate date. They also claimed the president and his vice had participated in previous elections and so the, one by BON was not a big deal.
However, Atiku who had been in the US, arrived Abuja on Saturday afternoon, in preparation for the debate. He came to the venue, met other candidates and even was present when it started. Atiku decided not to participate in the debate when it dawned on him that Buhari was not going to come for the debate. Big question? Does that mean Atiku’s candidacy was only for Buhari?
Anyway the debate ended well, for the trio who were present, we hope the Nigerian electorates would do the needful.
Beautiful rendition of Great Nation by Timi Dakolo.
